How to Make Your Next Event More ESG-Aligned
ESG and "green" get used almost interchangeably in event planning, but they're not the same thing. Environmental practices, cutting waste, sourcing local, choosing efficient venues, are only one third of the picture. Social and governance considerations matter just as much, and they're the parts that get skipped most often because they're harder to photograph for a wrap-up email. Here's how to think about all three when you're planning an event.
We've built ESG sustainability practices into how Above Creative Events (a.c.e) operates, not just how we advise clients, so this is a framework we use ourselves, not just a theory.
Environmental: The Part Everyone Thinks Of First
Venue choice. A venue's own energy efficiency and waste practices set the ceiling for how sustainable your event can realistically be, regardless of what you do on top of it.
Materials and waste
Reusable signage, digital agendas instead of printed ones, and clear recycling and food-waste separation cut down on the most visible environmental footprint of an event.
Sourcing and transport
Local catering and vendors reduce logistics emissions and, as a side benefit, usually simplify coordination too.
These practices are formalised in ISO 20121, the international standard specifically for ESG sustainability management in events. It's been used at events as large as the Olympics and the World Economic Forum's Davos meeting, and it's a useful checklist even if you're not pursuing formal certification.
Social: The Part That Gets Skipped
Accessibility
Physical access, dietary accommodation, and clear communication for attendees with different needs are social ESG commitments, not just hospitality nice-to-haves.
Fair labour practices
Vendors and onsite staff, including contracted event crew, should be working under fair conditions. This is worth asking about directly rather than assuming.
Community impact
Sourcing from local and diverse suppliers, and considering the event's footprint on the surrounding community, extends your event's social impact beyond the room itself.
Governance: The Part That Makes It Credible
Governance is what stops ESG-aligned events from being a one-off gesture. It's the accountability layer: setting measurable sustainability goals before the event, tracking them honestly afterward, and being transparent with stakeholders about what worked and what didn't.
Deloitte's research on corporate ESG sustainability progress found that the vast majority of executives are now reporting active progress toward sustainability goals. That expectation is increasingly extending down to individual events and the vendors chosen to run them, not just headline corporate reporting.
In practice, governance for an event can be as simple as a short pre-event brief stating what you're aiming for (a waste reduction target, an accessibility commitment, a supplier diversity goal) and a short post-event summary of what was actually achieved. That summary doesn't need to be polished. It needs to be accurate, and it needs to sit somewhere your team can reference before the next event, so the same goals aren't reinvented from scratch every time.
Making It Practical, Not Performative
The trap with ESG-aligned events is treating it as a marketing layer added at the end, a note on the programme, a recycling bin by the door. Real alignment means building environmental, social, and governance decisions into the planning brief from the very first conversation, alongside budget and venue.
It also means being honest about trade-offs. Not every ESG goal is achievable within every budget, and a credible approach says so clearly rather than overstating what was actually done. A smaller, well-documented improvement is worth more than a vague claim of being "a sustainable event" with nothing measurable behind it.
A useful test is whether you could hand your ESG summary to someone outside your organisation and have it hold up to a few direct questions. If the answer is genuinely yes, you're likely doing more than most events in this space already do.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What's the difference between a "green" event and an ESG-aligned one?
A green event focuses mainly on environmental practices. ESG sustainability, by contrast, also addresses social factors like accessibility and fair labour, and governance factors like measurable goals and transparent reporting.
2. Do we need ISO 20121 certification to run a sustainable event?
No. Certification is one route, but the standard's framework is useful as a planning checklist even without pursuing formal certification.
3. How do we measure whether an event was actually ESG-aligned?
Set specific, measurable goals before the event, such as waste reduction targets or accessibility commitments, and report honestly against them afterward rather than relying on general impressions.
4. Does ESG alignment cost more?
Some elements, like better sourcing or accessibility provisions, can add cost. Others, like reduced printing or better waste sorting, often save money. It depends heavily on what you prioritise.
5. Where should ESG considerations sit in the planning timeline?
As early as possible, ideally alongside the initial budget and venue conversation. Bolting ESG goals on after the venue and vendors are already locked in severely limits what's actually achievable.
6. How does a.c.e approach ESG alignment for client events?
ESG sustainability considerations are built into our own operations, which shapes how we advise clients on venue, sourcing, and reporting. You can read more on our sustainability page, or get in touch to talk through your event specifically.
Starting Where You Are
You don't need to solve environmental, social, and governance alignment perfectly on your first ESG-aligned event. You need a honest starting point, a few measurable goals, and a willingness to report on them accurately, even when the results are mixed. Most organisations improve steadily once they start measuring at all, simply because measurement forces decisions that used to happen by default.
That's a far more credible position than a polished sustainability statement with nothing measurable behind it.
An ESG-aligned event isn't the one that looks the greenest. It's the one that can show its work.
